Switch Vendors and You Start Over: The Biggest Trap of AI Tools

I’m Yang Qing, an architect with 10 years of big tech experience turned solopreneur. I deconstruct business from a technical perspective to help you avoid common pitfalls.
The content I share covers: boosting efficiency with AI tools, taking independent products global, and solopreneurship methodologies.

Have you ever thought about this:

Why is it that AI tools keep getting better, yet you keep feeling more stuck with them?

Switch vendors and you start over, the biggest trap of AI tools
Switch vendors and you start over, the biggest trap of AI tools

01 Four Vendors, Four Separate Memories#

A developer on Hacker News said something that gave me chills:

“I pay for ChatGPT, Claude, and Cursor, and I use Gemini through work. Four vendors, four separate conversation histories, four separate profiles of how I think. None of them talk to each other. Switch vendors and you start over.”

What that really means:

The context, preferences, and decisions you built up in Claude? Gone the second you switch to Cursor.

The AI assistant you carefully tuned in ChatGPT? Time to tune it all over again in Gemini.

You think you’re using AI. AI is using you.

02 This Isn’t a Feature Problem, It’s a Design Trap#

There’s another comment that hits even harder:

“I use 4-5 AI coding tools depending on the task. What constantly frustrates me: every tool stores context in a different place, in a different format. Switch from Claude Code to Cursor in the middle of a project, and you start from zero.”

See it now?

This isn’t a feature problem. It’s a design trap.

Every AI tool is busy building its own “walled garden.”

Your data, your preferences, your memory — all locked inside.

Want to switch tools? Sure, but there’s a price:

Start over.

AI tools walled garden: vendor lock-in
AI tools walled garden: vendor lock-in

03 The Migration Tax: The Hidden Cost of Switching#

Let me do the math.

Say you’ve used Claude for 3 months and accumulated:

  • Project architecture decisions: ~50
  • Code style preferences: ~20
  • Module dependencies: ~30
  • Bug fix records: ~100

Now you want to try Cursor.

You don’t just “open Cursor and start working.”

You have to:

  1. Manually copy CLAUDE.md to .cursorrules
  2. Reformat everything because the syntax is different
  3. Re-explain the project background
  4. Rebuild all the context

The whole thing takes at least 2 hours.

What if you use 4-5 tools? Repeat for each one.

This is what I call the AI tools’ “migration tax.”

04 Vendor Lock-in Is the Business Model#

So why does it work this way?

Plain and simple: vendor lock-in is the business model.

Claude wants you to only use Claude.

Cursor wants you to only use Cursor.

ChatGPT wants you to only use ChatGPT.

They have zero incentive to make their memories talk to each other.

They have every incentive to make you “unable to leave.”

The more you build up in Claude, the higher the cost of switching to Cursor.

So you stay put, even when another tool might fit your needs better.

05 ContextSync Breaks the Lock-in#

Is there a way out?

Yes.

ContextSync cross-tool memory sync
ContextSync cross-tool memory sync

ContextSync exists to break this trap:

One memory, shared by all tools.

A decision you make in Claude syncs automatically to Cursor, Windsurf, Gemini CLI, and so on.

New computer? Log in, your memory comes with you.

Switch from Claude to Cursor? Context migrates seamlessly.

No more “starting over.”

No more migration tax.

06 Limited Beta, Only 20 Spots Left#

The core idea is simple: your AI memory follows you, not the tool.

Switch from Claude to Cursor, context migrates seamlessly.

New computer? Log in, your memory comes with you.

Limited beta, only 20 spots left.

Beta perk: Join the beta, share your real-world questions, and get one month of Pro free ($9 value).

If you’re sick of feeling “kidnapped” by a single tool.

If you want the freedom to switch tools whenever you want, without paying the migration tax.
