CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, .cursorrules, GEMINI.md.
If you use multiple AI coding tools, these four files should ring a bell.
They all say the same thing, but each has its own format.
01 Config Files Out of Sync, AI Starts Hallucinating#
A developer on Hacker News vented:
“I use Claude, Codex, Cursor, and Gemini for different projects. Each tool has its own md file format. Four files saying the same thing, four chances for things to go out of sync. I always forget to update one of them, then wonder why Cursor is hallucinating my project structure while Claude gets it right.”
Sound familiar?
You update a rule in CLAUDE.md, forget to sync it to .cursorrules.
“My instruction files grew to 24 files, each over 400 lines. Claude started drifting off script. I asked Claude to check and fix it, and things got even messier.”
24 files, 400+ lines each.
Can you imagine the maintenance overhead?
Every time you change something, you have to check if all 24 files are in sync.
Miss one, and the AI starts generating code with wrong info.
